The short version. ColorPause has no account and no analytics, and this website sets no cookies. What you browse and use never leaves your Mac. The app goes online only to check for updates and, when you enter a license key, to activate or deactivate it with Polar.

What stays on your Mac

  • Your rules: the sites and apps on your list, your limits, and your days off.
  • Your stats: the time and visits counted for what’s on your list, shown on the Last 7 days page.
  • Your settings, such as whether ColorPause opens at login.
  • Your license: the key you enter, and when your trial started.

Your rules and stats are kept in ~/Library/Application Support/ColorPause, and your settings in ColorPause’s macOS preferences. None of it is uploaded, except your license key when you activate it, and we can’t see any of it.

What the app reads, and why

To know which window to gray, ColorPause reads a few things, on your Mac only:

  • The address of the visible tab in each window of a supported browser. It never reads the page itself: not its text, images, or anything you type.
  • Which app owns each window on your screen, and where each window is, from macOS’s list of windows. It doesn’t read window titles or anything inside your apps.
  • The site a web app opens, for sites you’ve installed as web apps from Safari or Chrome. It reads the address saved in the web app, so the app follows that site’s rule.

ColorPause compares these with your list as you go. It counts time and visits only for what’s on your list and keeps no record of anything else.

macOS asks you before ColorPause can read your browsers:

  • Automation, once for each browser, lets ColorPause ask the browser for the address of its visible tab and where its windows are.
  • Accessibility (recommended) lets ColorPause notice tab and window changes right away. It uses it for nothing else.

Apps need no permission. You can turn either permission off at any time in System Settings › Privacy & Security.

When the app goes online

ColorPause connects to the internet for two things only, and neither carries what you browse or use:

  • Updates. About once a day, and whenever you choose Check for Updates… in the ColorPause menu, ColorPause fetches https://getcolorpause.com/appcast.xml to see whether there’s a new version. Like any web request, this shows our web host, Cloudflare, your IP address, and the request includes your version of ColorPause. If you install an update, it downloads from getcolorpause.com too.
  • Your license. When you enter a license key, ColorPause contacts Polar to activate it, and again to deactivate it if you free up this Mac. It sends only the key and a label with your Mac’s model and the activation date.

ColorPause has no analytics or crash reporting, and it never sends your rules or your stats.

Buying ColorPause

Payments and license keys are handled by Polar (polar.sh), the merchant of record. Polar sells ColorPause to you, takes your payment, and delivers your license key, under its own buyer terms and privacy policy. The Buy buttons on this site take you to Polar’s checkout. Polar shares your email address and order details with us, so we can help with your license and refunds.

This website

This website sets no cookies and has no analytics, ads, trackers, third-party scripts, or external fonts. It’s hosted on Cloudflare Pages. Like any web host, Cloudflare receives your IP address and browser details in order to deliver the pages, and may log them for security.

If you email us, we use your address and message only to reply and to help you.
